Spider-Man reboot: who will be Spidey's love interest and who'll be the villain?

Mary Jane Won’t Be Love-Interest in SPIDER-MAN Reboot; Candidates Include Emma Roberts, Teresa Palmer, Moreby Matt Goldberg Posted:August 19th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

With Andrew Garfield locked to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot, the search continues to find the web-slinger’s love-interest. However, unlike Raimi’s trilogy, the love interest won’t be Mary Jane. While presumably that means the love interest is Gwen Stacy, Heat Vision reports that script pages given to actresses reading for the role don’t reveal the character’s name.

Among those actresses are (from left-to-right in the image above) Imogen Poots (Solitary Man), Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy), Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), and Emma Roberts (Valentine’s Day). HV makes clear “These are not screentests, which usually involve some sort of dealmaking, but rather readings and meetings,” and that another round of searching could take place if these actresses don’t work out. Hit the jump for more on the project. The Spider-Man reboot is set to open in 3D on July 3, 2012.

We already know that Sony and Webb are going for a “more gritty, contemporary redo of the series”. The budget is also rumored to be in the $80 million range (the original 2002 film reportedly cost $139 million). Finally, while we don’t know who the villain is (although it’s rumored to be The Lizard), we know that Sony looked at Inglourious Basterds‘ Christoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender for the role. Heat Vision says that the film will be set in high school, although it’s been reported that the setting would be moved to college due to Garfrield’s age (he’ll be 27 tomorrow). It’s worth noting that the ages of the actresses mentioned above range from 19 to 24. Of course, actors playing beneath their age is a time-honored tradition. The question is how far beneath their age can they go with the audience still buying it.

Production is set to begin in December and I really hope that the casting process for the female lead isn’t as drawn out and excruciating as the one for Peter Parker

Well, to be completly honest, I didn't like the idea of a Spider-Man's reboot, but now, it doesn't seem bad, specially when it has the (500) Days of Summer director (Marc Webb) and the David Fincher's Zodiac's screenplay writter (John Vanderbilt). It sounds promising now!
Andrew Garfield is a relatively fresh face, but well-known in the British cinema, television and theatre, I think... and "yes" he looks like Peter Parker, in my opinion, and I'm sure he can act (he'll share the big screen with Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley in this year's Never Let Me Go and in David Fincher's The Social Network, which means he has "something" to be part of such promising projects).
The contenders to play Peter Parker's love interest are true question points to me. To be completly honest, I don't know their work (none of theirs). But, looking for the pictures, I would say that Ophelia Lovibond, Lilly Collins and Teresa Palmer seem the actresses that I can see protraying Gwen Stacy, but I would say that if THE LOVE INTEREST WILL BE FELICIA HARDY/BLACK CAT (which may be possible, because, if I'm not wrong, there was a love story between her and Peter Parker in the animated series, I think) and in this way, the girl with most "cat power" seems Lilly Collins, but Ophelia Lovibond sounds more interesting, more "question point".
For the villain, Christopher Waltz is attached to play the villain (the rumours say that the "bad guy" will be the Lizzard) and I only can say: please give him the role!

So, according to my "suggestions", the lead cast will be:
- Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker
- Ophelia Lovibond as "love interest"
- Christopher Waltz as "the villain"

I'm waiting for the next Spider-Man with high expectations!
