Today is all about the sound categories. Predicting these is always a gamble this early out, and to be honest they are pretty much a gamble the night before the nominations are announced. These branches can be really flighty, especially when it comes to score and song. Who knows what will be embraced, and this early out predicting songs and scores without knowing who is composing and how integral they’ll be to the actual films can be ridiculous, but we have to start somewhere.
As with the past three days, I’ll be posting my own breakdown as well as Josh’s picks, but please visit Josh’s blog for more of his take on these races.
Let’s get it on!
In space, no one can hear you scream...or can they? |
Sound Editing/Mixing:
I’m never really good at identifying what the difference is between Editing and Mixing here, which is why The Fisti Awards only have one Sound category. What I gather is that editing has more to do with manufactured sounds and effects done AFTER filming, and mixing has to do with properly molding sounds recorded during filming. With that in mind…
My Picks:
Editing:
Elysium
Gravity
Man of Steel
Rush
Winter’s Tale
Mixing:
The Counselor
Elysium
Gravity
Inside Llewyn Davis
Rush
Josh’s Picks:
Editing:
Elysium
Gravity
Man of Steel
Rush
Star Trek Into Darkness
Mixing:
Elysium
Gravity
Man of Steel
Rush
Star Trek Into Darkness
We are both pretty sure about ‘Gravity’ and ‘Rush’ being big players in both categories. I’d go as far as to say that I wouldn’t be surprised to see ‘Rush’ take both Oscars, but it’s way too early to call that right now.
Who is scoring your movie?!?!?! |
Original Score:
This is a total fucking gamble since no one knows what these scores are going to sound like at this point. They do like Best Picture nominees though, so…
I’m blind predicting:
The Counselor (not announced)
Gravity (Price)
The Monuments Men (Desplat)
Rush (Zimmer)*
Serena (not announced)
*Zimmer also has Winter’s Tale this year, which could wind up being more rapturous thanks to the themes of the film.
Josh’s Picks:
The Counselor (not announced)
Gravity (Price)
The Monuments Men (Desplat)
Rush (Zimmer)
Winter's Tale (Zimmer)
Josh and I had exactly the same thoughts here; he just has Zimmer double dipping and has Serena on the outside looking in. I’m pretty sure that only one of these is making it (LOL) but for now this is as good a guess as any.
Something to sing about? |
Original Song:
LOL, like we know shit about this ATM! I can only take a stab at films I think will have original songs and just hope that they register in the end. We already know that ‘The Great Gatsby’ has a bounty of original songs to choose from, and then again will they all be deemed original (since the Academy requires that they were actually written for the said film). The only one I’m sure of is Monster’s University. If there is an original song about friendship or some shit, the Academy will eat that up by the gigantic spoonful. It will probably even win.
My Picks:
a song from a documentary feature
a song from The Great Gatsby
a song from Inside Llewyn Davis
a song from Monster's University
a song from Winter's Tale
Josh’s Picks:
a song from Can a Song Save Your Life
a song from The Great Gatsby
a song from Inside Llewyn Davis
a song from Monster’s University
a song from Winter’s Tale
I cheated a bit and listed ‘a documentary feature’ as a prediction. Not sure if that counts, but I’ll take what I can get at this point. Other than that, Josh and I see eye to eye here. Expected, since there really isn’t any other way to look at this right now.
