So, apparently our 2012 Oscar host has been cast, and it's Seth MacFarlane! I'm not sure what to make of this. I mean, it could be considered an inspired direction for the Academy to take, and then again this could really crash and burn in a pretty big way. Seth MacFarlane is best known for his biting breed of adult cartoons and that is kind of the reason this seems odd. Sure, he's a comedian, but it takes more than that to host the Oscars. You have to have real presence, and I'm not sure this is something that MacFarlane can handle. The Oscars are about entertaining. You have to be funny AND charming. Look at what happened when Chris Rock hosted. Sure, he's funny...but he's not a charmer. Look at what happened when Anne and James hosted. Sure, they're charming...but. You get my point. Recently, Hugh Jackman is really the only person who got BOTH right in a pretty big way. Even the Academy's decision to bring back Billy Crystal was a failure of epic preportions (he's run his course and pretty much sunk that ship). So, I'm on the fence here. This could really work, or...it couldn't.
