We reported earlier today that Shia LaBeouf and Chris Pine are “rumored choices” for the lead role in John Hillcoat’s Triple Nine — it looks like LaBeouf and Pine are likewise among a group of young actors in contention for a starring role in Safe House opposite Denzel Washington. Here’s the full list:

•Ryan Reynolds
•Tom Hardy
•Zac Efron
•James McAvoy
•Sam Worthington
•Shia LaBeouf
•Taylor Kitsch
•Garrett Hedlund
•Channing Tatum
•Jake Gyllenhaal
•Chris Pine
•Chris Hemsworth

Hit the jump for more details on the project, including the nature of the role the victor will play.
The lengthy list is culled from reports by Deadline and Heat Vision; the latter indicates that Reynolds is “emerging as the frontrunner.” Washington finalized his deal weeks ago, and Universal is expected to extend an offer to one of the above shortly.
The thriller was scripted by David Guggenheim, with Swedish director Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash) making his English-language debut. The plot revolves around “the only surviving agent of an attack on a CIA safe house as he tries to get a lethal prisoner to a second safe house before being taken out by violent forces that want them both dead.” Washington will play the prisoner, while the chosen will play the CIA agent."

This week is full of "cast battles" and the same happens with the next movie that will be starred by Denzel Washington, Triple Nines. Well, but it always happens when there's an ambitious project, which is a positive sign for this one!
The contenders for the role are too many to say anything about them all, so, let's talk only about those who seem the most likeable for the role of a CIA agent (in alphabetical order):

- Jake Gyllenhaal is an Academy Award nominee (for his supporting role in Brokeback Mountain) that has his name credited in some very good movies and has some popularity. He may not be the young actor, but he's one of the best of the list and, one day, he may become a very good performer, but at the moment is a good one and I can see him alongside Denzel Washington in an action flick, because I'm almost sure that there would be an "equilibrium" in the movie if these two stars starred it, both would shine and no one would be forgetten;

- James McAvoy is one of the most promising actors with some "action and kick-ass work" in Wanted (an huge sucess, btw) and the guy can act (just watch The Last King of Scotland and Atonement). He's Scotish and I'm not really sure if a CIA agent should have THAT accent, but to be completly honest I didn't pay attention to his accent in Wanted (I think he played an American). Anyway, McAvoy can be the strongest actor for the role, not only for his previous works, but also for his talent, making interesting seeing him sharing the big screen with Washington;

- Ryan Reynolds may not have a brilliant career, he may not be a BIG movie star or not have a lot of important awards, but Reynolds is becoming something shinning. The guy seems a nice and lucky one (do you know who's his wife?) and has a lot of experience in "kick-ass roles" (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), which may be useful for fighting scenes, and shinned alongside Sandra Bullock in The Proposal without being put on her shadow, which may be good if he will share the credits with the BIG Denzel Washington. But Reynolds may have another advantage: he may be the cheapest of the strongest candidates and we all heard about the economic crisis and how Hollywood is dealing with it!

Any of these three actors would be a good choice, but if I was the director, I would choose James McAvoy. If I was the producer, I would choose Ryan Reynolds. If I was the majority of the audiences, I would choose Jake Gyllenhaal. But I like McAvoy more than the others.

(I must apologize the other actors, but I simply don't like the teenage icon look of Efron and I think that "my strongest candidates" are the best for the part)
